Our History

A story of faith, obedience, and service

The Beginning

In 1993, after personally experiencing homelessness in Colorado, Mike and Tina Wurschmidt felt a profound calling from God. Their own journey through hardship opened their eyes to the struggles faced by those living on the streets. Rather than returning to comfortable lives, they chose to answer a higher calling.

"We knew God was calling us not just to remember what we'd been through, but to walk alongside others who were going through it."

— Mike Wurschmidt, Founder

What began as a personal conviction quickly grew into a mission. Mike and Tina understood that true ministry isn't about programs or buildings—it's about presence, dignity, and showing people the love of Christ through action.

The Wurschmidts moved to Pittsburgh, where Mike attended seminary while they began serving on the streets. They fed the hungry, offered prayer, and built relationships with those society often overlooks.

Today

Shepherd's Heart Fellowship now operates from our location at 13 Pride Street in Pittsburgh's Hill District. Our ministry has grown to include multiple programs, but our mission remains unchanged: to share the love of Jesus with those who need it most.

The Veteran's Home provides transitional housing for homeless veterans, offering them not just shelter but a community of support and accountability. Our Drop-In Center continues to serve hot meals and fellowship four mornings a week. Weekly worship services, recovery groups, and life skills training round out our comprehensive approach to restoration.

We've witnessed countless lives transformed—men and women finding hope, healing from addiction, securing employment, and most importantly, encountering the love of Christ. From Floyd, who went from homelessness to homeownership, to veterans who've found purpose again, each story reminds us why we do this work.
